Master Class: Performance Art / Video

A 4-day performance workshop facilitated by Maya Suess, New York / Vancouver
Presented by VIVO Media Arts Centre
Cost: $150
April 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th
VIVO Media Arts Centre

This special session of Performance Art / Video is an intensive forum for artists working within the mediums of performance art and performance for video to bring their ideas, and works-in-process, for development and completion.

Utilizing the resources of VIVO, participants will have the opportunity to work out conceptual, aesthetic and formal challenges. Extending from the need of each project, artists can explore various strategies of lighting, shooting, editing, durational art and exhibition options. Within the structure of the workshop, formal methods of performative video will be investigated through a collective group symposium and an in-depth analysis of individual work. Participants will have limited access to VIVO resources for the duration of the week between sessions. We will conclude with an informal public event at VIVO, presenting the works produced in the workshops.

Networking and community building is an important element of this workshop: providing a space for emerging and established artists to develop working relationships. Also included is the opportunity to present finished works to Video Out for possible distribution.

Participants are expected to bring their experience and curiosity, and be ready to collectively problem solve.

Maya Suess is a New York based artist currently teaching a senior class in Performance Art at Emily Carr; she brings her experience, keen performative eye, and strong facilitation skills to VIVO for an intensive exploration of the form.
